Recently, Australian media reported that the Australian Office of Taxation (ATO) has introduced new restrictive measures, and the application period for Australian Director ID has ended on November 30. Violators may face criminal fines of up to $13000 or civil penalties of up to millions. Today’s article will introduce the relevant information about the director ID in detail.
1. What is Director ID
Director ID (DIN) is a 15 digit personal director identification number. A director (or a person who plans to become a director) will be given a number after his/her identity is verified, which will help prevent the use of false or fraudulent directorship.
You must apply for your own DIN only once and retain your DIN permanently, even if you:
●Change company
●Ceasing to hold the office of director
●Change your name
●Moving to other states or overseas
In the future, your director ID will be associated with the company where you hold the position of director, which will make it easier for government regulators to track the relationship between directors and the company.
2. Who needs to apply
If you are or will be a director of the following companies, you need to have a Director ID:
●Corporations Act 2001 (Corporations Act),Sub institutions or registered foreign companies;
●According to Corporations (Aborigina and Torres Straight Islander) Act 2006
(CATSI Act).
3. When to apply
If you are appointed as a director under the Corporations Act before October 31, 2021, you must apply for director ID before November 30, 2022. Please refer to the following table for specific time:
Time of appointment as director | Required time |
On or before October 31, 2021 | November 1, 2021 to November 30, 2022 |
November 1, 2021 to April 4, 2022 | Within 28 days after appointment as a director |
From April 5, 2022 | Before appointing a director |
4. Application for extension
If you cannot apply for your director ID before the deadline, you need to fill in the Application for an extension of time to apply for a director ID, an application form for extending the application for director ID. The official website for applying for extension is:

It is worth noting that the extension can only be extended to December 14, 2022. It only takes a few minutes to complete the application. In order to avoid fines and other accountability, it is necessary to submit an extension application as soon as possible.
